Katrina's Kids Project
children's drawings

Katrina's Kid Project volunteers worked tirelessly providing emotional support for the children during their stay in the Reliant/Astrodome shelters. Since then, the group been putting the children's artwork into action and raising money to help evacuee children:

  • The National Arts Club in New York City recently exhibited the children's artwork at a gala event and presented Katrina's Kids Project with the Education Gold Medal.
  • The children's artwork is on a national tour to raise funds and promote awareness.
  • Katrina's Kids Project is providing visual and performing arts programming, funding an art therapist and has supplied art materials for the New Orleans West Prep Academy (NOW) in Houston, Texas that serves 360 evacuee children.
  • The Project is also supporting an after school arts education program in New Orleans run by Kid smART, an organization whose mission is to teach under-resourced children life skills through visual and performing arts.
  • This summer, we will be providing scholarships for 24 evacuee children to attend a summer camp program at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans.
  • Heron Cove Press is creating greeting cards, note cards and wrapping paper featuring the children's work for retail sale. Heron Cove Press can be contacted at: katrinaskids@heroncovepress.com
  • Larson-Juhl, the leading designer, manufacture and distributor of fine custom frames is donating frames, mats, and supplies to frame the collection.
  • Three quilts have been created showcasing the children's emotional artwork. Celebrated, New Orleans textile artist Cecilia Pedescleaux, has created two of the quilts which incorporate scenes from New Orleans. The third quilt was created in Texas and features a border of fabric reclaimed from the storm.
  • Katrina's Kids Project was commended by American's Promise as part of an award presented to the City of Houston for its positive response to the hurricanes.
  • T-shirts, calendars and tote bags featuring the children's art are available via our website store.
  • Time Warner Cable and Capital One featured the children's drawings on their 2005 holiday cards.
  • Nine of the children's images are featured in a new book by Jim Greenman of Bright Horizons Family Solutions called What Happened to MY World: Helping Children Cope with Natural Disaster and Catastrophe.
  • Four prints were sold at a National Arts Club fundraising event with the proceeds go to the New Orleans based, Heritage Foundation for Arts and Cultural Sustainability.
  • While the Houston area shelters were open, Katrina's Kids Project volunteers coordinated the distribution of items offered by visitors to our website. These items included hundreds of children's books, art kits, handmade quilts, stuffed animals, cards created by a school in Dallas and 50 handmade pillows created by three girls in California.
  • We would like to thank Ignited Minds of Marina del Rey, CA for providing website and design services.
